New World Symphony Celebrates American Ideals with Lincoln Portrait
The New World Symphony in Miami Beach is set to commence its season with a performance of Aaron Copland's Lincoln Portrait, a work commissioned in 1942 to uplift spirits during World War II. This orchestral piece features a narrator who delivers excerpts from Abraham Lincoln's speeches, including the iconic Gettysburg Address. Traditionally, distinguished figures from various fields have been invited to perform the narration, with past narrators including Gregory Peck, James Earl Jones, and Maya Angelou. For this weekend's performance, actor Joshua Malina, known for his role in NBC's The West Wing, will take on the narration. Malina emphasizes the enduring relevance of Lincoln's messages in today's politically charged environment, advocating for unity amidst division. The season-opening concerts are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, featuring conductor Stphane Denve and a program that includes Copland's Lincoln Portrait alongside works by Lee and Beethoven. Notably, the Saturday performance will also be presented as a WALLCAST, showcasing enhanced audio and visual technology for outdoor audiences at SoundScape Park.

Cedric was hands down hilarious!
The local opening act, Jack Sheppard, was fantastic. I cannot recall the name of the second comedian, but he was amazing. He could have been the only opening act and I would have been pleased with that. New World Symphony was great, performing the same routine in Columbus for over a decade. It was disappointing to see him opening for a nationally known act with stale material. This had all the makings of a great night out with friends. The comedian that went on before New World Symphony was hilarious! He is nothing short of fresh and related well to the audience. I believe his name was J.J. Williamson. His set was non-stop funny. I am happy to have had the opportunity to see him live for the first time. He can do comedy anywhere for any type of audience.
Jerry was fantastic!!
"I have to tell you, I really didn't expect much from this show. Well, New World Symphony ROCKED that place!!!! They were great, and I loved all the "Human cartooning" that they do. After watching, I'm telling you for the last time, I figure it would be the same thing. Different material, but you know, the same type of stuff. I just didn't want to say that I never got to see him live. From the beginning of their set, they ran out on stage and grabbed the mic and took control of the audience, and kept it going for about 70 minutes. New World Symphony is the best, and I'm glad I saw them live. I look forward to seeing them again when they come back to the San Diego area or Phoenix area, since I live in Yuma, AZ and the drive is about the same!!!"
